Such is the case with newly minted crew leader, Mike Briggs. Mike has been with the Jay Carter Roofing team for five years. Hired as an installer, he quickly made his mark through hard work, attention to detail and a consistently positive attitude.

Recognized as a team player, he has earned the respect of the entire Carter organization. His knowledge of the business and an engaging personality has allowed him to deal effectively with customers – communicating the work plan and dealing with concerns as a job progresses.

Mike’s leadership skills will be further evident as Jay Carter roofing rolls out a new initiative under the Ontario Health and Safety Program. (See Focus on Health and Safety).

Mike is also a fine example to others in the way he balances work and family. Celebrating the birth of his second child, Mike exemplifies the core values of the Jay Carter organization, where dedication to family is just as important as doing the job.

Jay Carter Roofing has continued to cement its reputation as a premium installer of commercial roofing products with two recent jobs:

In Scarborough, the company has just completed an 18,000-square-foot recover project using Thermoplastic Olefin (TPO). The existing roof – a standard BUR – with hot tar and aggregate was leaking badly. Jay Carter successfully convinced the building owner to go with the TPO for its ‘green’ qualities and its durability.

The job, acquired by referral, has earned the praise of the owner and guarantees a durable, long-lasting roof.

In Richmond Hill, the Jay Carter Team was called in by Gaydon Contractors Ltd. to install a standing-seam metal roof on a new Keg restaurant. This will be the fourth Keg job that Jay Carter has done for Gaydon.

Focus on Health and Safety

Worker safety has always been a focus item at Jay Carter Roofing. Now, a program developed by the Workplace Safety & Insurance Board (formerly the Worker’s Compensation Board) has added a new twist.

The new WSIB initiative groups companies to encourage a more comprehensive rollout of its Health and Safety Policy. Under the auspices of the Barrie Construction Association, Jay Carter Roofing is working with 13 other companies to share education and rollout techniques. One or two employees from each company is given training with the understanding they will then become trainers within their individual organizations.

The WSIB monitors the progress each company is making in getting education to its employees. And, in a unique twist, the group is only as good as its weakest member. The incentive for getting the entire group up to speed? Lower WSIB premiums!

Crew leader Mike Briggs has been selected as trainer for Jay Carter Roofing.

“It’s a great opportunity,” says Mike. “Networking and sharing ideas with the other companies ensures you’re not alone. I’m convinced we’ll all succeed together.”
Workplace Injuries and Illness: The aftermath

When injuries or illness occur, many companies leave workers to fend for themselves. But Jay Carter Roofing protects its workers though a program developed by the Canadian Standards Association and tailored to meet the needs of the Carter team.

The CSA is a not-for-profit membership-based association serving business, industry, government and consumers in Canada and the global marketplace.

The program, dubbed ‘Return to Work’ focuses on getting team members back to safe and productive work as soon as medically possible, stressing complete cooperation between employee and employer.

Most injured workers can return to some type of work even while they are still recovering. Returning to daily work and life activities can actually help in the recovery process. In fact, research shows that the longer a worker is off work due to injury or illness, the less likelihood there is of that person returning to work.

Communication is important for a successful return to work. Workers benefit most when they know the company is interested in their well being.

At Jay Carter Roofing, a returning worker is given modified duties and is paid accordingly.
Evidence of a roof leak and the source of the leak often have little in common.

“Depending on the type of structure you have,” says Jay Carter, president, Jay Carter Roofing, “the leak can be a long way from the interior damage.

“Water finds its own path and it’s not uncommon for the entry point to be hundreds of feet from the affected interior.”

The most effective way to find a leak, says Carter, is through a new technique his company uses, known as thermal imaging.

Buildings may be quickly and thoroughly scanned using a thermal imager – an infrared camera that helps identify problem areas that can’t be seen by the naked eye. With infrared images, water damage is easily detected. An infrared camera helps pinpoint water intrusion, find moisture beneath the surface, and document dryness with accuracy and confidence.

Often, conventional home inspectors will find surface evidence of water leaks in basements or ceilings, and the good will of sellers is relied upon when asked if the problem has been fixed. Want to know for sure? A thermal inspection will eliminate the guesswork, providing home and building owners the peace of mind that only certainty can bring.

Buying or selling a property, or simply concerned about moisture in your building, call Jay Carter Roofing and ask about Thermal Imaging.

The following item was recently issued as a ‘press release’ by Jay Carter Roofing. We think you’ll find it interesting.

Mariners Haven, an exclusive condominium community on the western shores of Georgian Bay has become a trend setter in the move to sustainable living.

Mariners is undergoing one of the most ambitious re-roofing projects in southern Ontario – moving from traditional cedar to a synthetic material made from re-cycled products.

The prime contractor, Jay Carter Roofing, is replacing the aging cedar, on the entire complex, with the increasingly popular product Enviroshake®. Enviroshake is made from 95 percent recycled materials including plastics, fibers, and tire-derived rubber. It has a superior resistance to UV rays and looks like real cedar.

Mariners Haven, originally built by the famous Kaufman family, is a collection of 32 semi-detached homes, built around a private marina basin. The community was conceived and started in the mid 1980s with cedar shake roofs that have begun to deteriorate and must be replaced.

Richard Wilson, president of the Mariners condominium board and an expert in large renovation projects said the original plan was to go back to cedar. “We hired an engineering firm to assess the roofs and to help write the specifications for the replacement. Originally, we were looking at replacement with a better cedar, but Jay Carter came back to us with an alternate proposal – to go with Enviroshake®.

“If it hadn’t been for Jay Carter, says Richard Wilson, it’s unlikely we would have considered Enviroshake. His proposal was professional, organized and demonstrated a broad understanding of roofing and roofing products. Now, we’ve got a great solution that is also good for the environment. It’s a win-win.”

Lead engineer for R.J. Burnside and Associates, Mina Tesseris – the firm hired to help with the assessment and proposals – is convinced that Mariners “was diligent in making this sound decision”.

“In terms of

product, cost and the manufacturer’s warranty,” he said, “this is a very good proposition.”

Dennis Hewko, president of Enviroshake, has full confidence that the Mariners project is in good hands.

Explains Hewko: “Jay Carter Roofing has proven itself on large Enviroshake installations, and its reputation for quality and reliability are well known.

“They have developed extensive experience completing complex residential and commercial projects. Their people are given instruction on all types of roofing and the appropriate safety practices. The company’s reputation for superior safety standards, materials and workmanship is hard earned.

“As far as I can see,” says Hewko, “they’re out to set the standard by which other companies are judged.”

Re-Roofing at The Keg

A major construction management company, located in the GTA, needed a top-notch roofing company to help them with a significant challenge. Three locations of The Keg Restaurants – Oshawa, Scarborough and Etobicoke – required re-roofing, and fast. The buildings were clad in cedar shake that was rapidly deteriorating and the job had to be done without disrupting restaurant business.

Gaydon Contractors wasted no time getting in touch with Jay Carter Roofing.

Jay Carter crews moved quickly to strip the existing roofing and install a new line of Owens Corning Oakridge Premium shingles – but not without a few surprises. Two of the buildings had asbestos under the roof deck and this had to be removed before re-roofing could proceed.

Carter crews removed the cedar shake, the existing roof deck and the asbestos. With that work completed, they re-sheathed the entire roof deck with half inch plywood, applied synthetic felt underlayment, ice and water shield, all flashing, and finally, the Owens Corning shingles.

The safety of restaurant patrons was a major concern and restricted normal roofing removal procedures while poor weather during the projects hindered production.

But Gaydon management couldn’t have been happier. In a letter to the company, Gaydon praised Jay Carter Roofing for “successfully completing the three challenging projects according to budget and timing with exceptional levels of safety and management”.
Keeping installers safe is not just essential, it’s the law.

A key part of the Jay Carter Roofing uniform is a heavy-duty safety harness. Special gear on the harness allows the installer to clip onto thick lines that have been secured to the roof at its highest point. These lines, suitable for mountain climbing, allow the installer to move quickly and safely over the roof, no matter how steep the pitch.

“There’s no such thing as being too safe,” says Jay Carter crew chief, Doug Wood. “Everyone on a crew, whether they’re on the roof or on the ground, watches for things that could compromise safety.
Yes, it’s that time again. No need to break out the winter jackets just yet, but it is time to start getting prepared. Winter is on its way. While it can be one of the most beautiful times of the year, it doesn’t come without challenges. And, if your roof isn’t in tip-top shape, snow, ice and high winds can turn winter into a nightmare.

It’s difficult to get a good look at your roof from the ground and doing your own inspection is a dangerous undertaking – especially on a steep slope. Even new roofs are not always a guarantee against winter’s ravages.

Broken or missing shingles and deteriorating flashings are just a few of the problems you might not be able to see. Inadequate insulation can also lead to a host of problems, including ice buildup at the eaves during periods of rapid freeze and thaw. When signs of a leak do occur, the damage is often extensive.

Why not put your mind at ease. Call us for a free, no obligation inspection of your roof and insulation. If your roof is in good shape, we’ll tell you. But if we see problems, we’ll photograph and document the problems and provide you with a detailed estimate for all necessary repairs. You can reach us by phone – 1.877.490.3400 – or through the ‘Request a Quote’ form on our website.

This magnificent structure is being enlarged and fully restored thanks to contributions from the City of Guelph, the Government of Ontario and the Government of Canada.

“It’s a beautiful building,” says Jay Carter, “built before Confederation, and we’re pleased and proud to be part of the restoration of this important heritage site.”

The Carter Roofing team is well past the half-way point on their part of the project. As many as four layers of old shingles and a large section of the roof deck had to be removed. Hazardous asbestos also had to be removed before the re-roofing could begin. The team replaced all sloped and flat sections of roof as well as ornamental fencing and frames on roof-level windows and doors.

Jay Carter worked with the city and convinced them to go with a ‘green’ roofing product from CertainTeed, called Solaris – so named for its reflective qualities, reflecting, rather than absorbing sunlight. Recycled materials and a 50-year warranty are key selling points with Solaris.

Working on sloped roofs, some five storeys off ground level, the crew is constantly thinking safety.

“When this project is done,” says Crew Chief Mike Briggs, “it’ll be great to say we had a hand in it.”

Showing Off

We have added a new, modern display and product offerings featuring a ‘green’ theme, reflecting a heightened interest in energy conservation.

One of the newest – and inspired product offerings – is a synthetic slate, manufactured and sold by InSpire Roofing Products. It’s a perfect combination of the natural beauty found in slate, along with the most technologically advanced methods and materials.

For instance, multiple molds are used to create a variety of edges and surfaces, creating the look of real slate. InSpire has strength, durability and a wide range of colour options.

Jay Carter Roofing is a preferred installer of InSpire with a number of projects in our portfolio, the latest of which is a major renovation in the Rosedale area of Toronto. The renovation is being managed by Marcon General Contractors, Inc.

Selling Solar

With energy costs climbing and the spotlight on conservation, more home and building owners these days are looking at solar panels. And like all new technologies, prices are coming down.

Jay Carter Roofing sells and installs one of the best solar capture systems on the market today. Manufactured by Akeena Solar, Inc. of Los Gatos California – the panels – called Andalay incorporate high efficiency in a product that offers great aesthetics and superior reliability.

Unlike some solar panels, Andalay panels are attractive, install quickly and resemble a skylight when in place. This product offers superior performance and brings solar to its rightful place at the forefront of alternative energy technologies. And the economics make sense.
Repair or Replace – A Guide to Re-roofing

The decision to repair or replace your roof is not taken easily. Without question, the cost of a new roof – especially if the existing one must be stripped – is an expensive proposition. But there are some simple guidelines:

Leaks can occur in places where the roof meets another surface, such as a chimney, skylight or vent. If this is the case, a competent roofer can often fix the problem on the spot.

If damage from wind or wind-blown debris has dislodged a shingle, tile or shake, this can also be fixed.

As with all things, on or in the home, it’s cheaper to make a small repair than opt for a major replacement.

However, if the roof has suffered severe damage over a wide area from, for example, a major wind or hail storm, or if the roof has exceeded its service life and is deteriorating – no amount of repair will do.

In short, there is only one way to find out. You need the services of a professional roofer. At Jay Carter Roofing, we provide free inspections that include a written report, photographs, and an estimate to repair or replace your roof. Call us at 877-490-3400.

Either way, you’ll know you’re making the right decision on one of the most important elements of your home.

Jay Carter becomes a Gilda’s Club sponsorGilda Radner, one of the original members of the cast of Saturday Night Live died of ovarian cancer in 1989. But her memory lives on through Gilda’s Club and the work of thousands of dedicated individuals. Her dream was to create a community for cancer victims and their families – a place where they could engage in life-enriching activities, find inspiration and share strategies for living with cancer. Jay Carter Roofing provided the roofing service for the new Barrie facility as well as a significant donation.

But is your roof up to the challenge?

Winter can be one of the most beautiful times of the year. But snow, ice and high winds can turn winter into a nightmare, especially if your roof is not up to the task. It’s difficult to get a good look at your roof from the ground and doing your own inspection is a dangerous undertaking – especially on a steep slope. Even new roofs are not always immune to winter’s ravages.

Broken or missing shingles, curling or buckling on shingle edges and deteriorating flashings are just a few of the problems you might not be able to see. And inadequate insulation can lead to a host of problems, including ice buildup at the eaves during periods of rapid freeze and thaw. When signs of a leak do occur, the problem is often more extensive than we realize.

Put your mind at ease. Call us for a no-cost, no obligation inspection of your roof and insulation. If your roof is in good shape, we’ll tell you. But if we see problems, we’ll take photos and document the problems and provide you with a detailed estimate for all necessary repairs.

Skills upgrading keeps Jay Carter on top

At Jay Carter Roofing, our employees are roofing professionals – and not by accident. As new methods and materials are introduced to the market, we hold regular training sessions to ensure our people are up to speed. As of this writing, all Jay Carter employees have received RCI certification to carry out roof inspections.

Safety first!

Jay Carter employees practice safety from the moment they arrive until the work is done. For instance, all ladders must be tied off securely to all structures. In order for this to happen safely, one person is required to hold the ladder securely until the first person up can ensure the ladder has been properly tied off. It pays to be safe.

Our First Newsletter

Welcome to the first issue of our newsletter. In it, you’ll find some of the things we’re doing to give you the best service possible. We want to keep you up to date on what’s happening within the company and the industry. But what tops the list is our desire to help you become an informed consumer.

Your roof is one of the most important components of your house or building and we aim to help you protect that investment. In future issues, we’ll offer tips and techniques to help you avoid problems before they become headaches. In the meantime, we hope you find this first issue useful and informative.

We’ve Moved

With growth comes the need for more space. And so, we’re pleased to announce the opening of our new location in Newmarket. It’s geographically central, spacious and allows us to put all of our operations under one roof. We’re at 1205 Twinney Drive, Unit 12, just minutes from the 404 and Davis Drive. If you’re in the neighbourhood, please drop in.

Using Technology

At Jay Carter Roofing we’ve put technology to work for our clients.

We’ve created a custom-built, online roofing system, equipped with proprietary management tools – one that we think is unparalleled in the industry. This system can be accessed by any authorized user, 24 hours a day, with all the security features that you would expect from a high-end system.

Using our new system, we can provide home and building owners with a description of their property, a computer-generated sketch of the work to be done, high-quality digital photographs and a detailed estimate to support our recommendations. Assessment information and quotes can be available within hours of an inspection.

Our online, interactive system also provides our clients with all the information they need after a job has begun, such as progress reports, inspection data and a post job survey. At any time, our clients can communicate with us through the system and receive an instant reply.

All of this function is integrated with our head office job management and dispatch call center. We can track our crews using GPS technology, communicate quickly with our field foremen, and treat each of our evaluation teams as a virtual mobile office.

This is the future of roofing, and we are on the leading edge. We will continue to develop and add to our system as new technologies emerge – all in an effort to serve you better.

At Jay Carter Roofing we feel that all roofs should have regular inspections and proper maintenance. And the most effective way to achieve this is through a formal, long-term relationship with a professional roofing contractor.

Jay Carter Roofing understands roof systems, has a trained and experienced workforce and can respond quickly if problems arise. We’re established in the community, and we understand the local business environment.

While the majority of roofing material manufacturers turn out excellent products, their warranties often come up short when problems develop or damage occurs. That’s why we believe the best protection is a formal, long-term maintenance agreement with a professional roofing contractor.

A maintenance program can help to identify potential problems in their early stages, finding and fixing them before leaks occur. Too many owners have their roofs examined only after they see signs of a leak. As well, a maintenance program sets up a planned, organized approach to roof protection, greatly improving response times in the event of problems. In contrast, warranty repairs can take time to be processed, while the problem remains unresolved.
